English Dub Review: Kaiju Girl Caramelise “Kuroe vs. Akae”

Overview:

While Kuroe is at rock bottom, a giant flying kaiju threatens the city.

Our Take(Spoilers):

I don’t talk about music outside of the OP and ED very often. But I have to mention how awesome the music that plays when Kuroe transforms into Harugon is. If you’re a Godzilla fan at all, then you know exactly what I’m talking about. It manages to sound exactly like the theme for the famous kaiju while also being different enough to avoid any copyright issues, I assume. It’s so iconic, and like most things in this show, it feels like a loving homage to kaiju films without feeling like a ripoff.

The last couple of episodes have been a bit depressing, but now I think I’m back on board. I am a bit concerned for Kuroe now that her heart-spine thing has broken. I’m hoping that it wasn’t that thing that was allowing her to have a human form. Now that it seems that Minami has figured out that Kuroe is Harugon, I would hope that she can still change back. It’s nice to know that they both realize they made a mistake and need to talk to each other to rectify it.

I had a theory that Akae might be the redhead kid we were introduced to in the last episode. The timing of his arrival and a red kaiju seemed too coincidental. I think we can rule that out now that we’ve seen him watching the fight. I didn’t get to review last week’s episode, but I wanted to talk about him a bit. His name is Daichi, and he’s apparently an elementary schooler who had a weird growth spurt. Since he looks like an adult, Minami thought that Kuroe was cheating on him with Daichi. Once Daichi showed Minami his school photo, that cleared things up.

We haven’t seen Rinko or Hibino in a while, and I hope that they’re okay. But at the same time, I hope Rinko suffers some consequences for what she’s done. It is kind of her fault that two kaiju have been causing havoc all over town. Sure, Kuroe has been kind enough to try and keep the damage minimal, but this new kaiju doesn’t have that kind of self-control. I’m glad we got through the little rough patch, but there are still some mysteries that I would like to see addressed.
