English Dub Review: Rent-a-Girlfriend “Bra and Girlfriend”
Overview:
Kazuya runs into Chizuru at the laundromat and finds that she’s left her bra behind.
Our Take(Spoilers):
It’s very telling when I have to add a spoiler tag for someone’s bra. The spoiler is that the bra wasn’t Chizuru’s but a neighbor’s. So all the dumb conflict we got at the beginning of the episode was unnecessary, like most of the conflict in this show. Kazuya is the most spineless harem protagonist I’ve ever seen. When Chizuru came back to give Kazuya tickets to her show, he started freaking out that she would think he was a pervert. It’s a bra, my dude, just ask her if she left it or something, and you would have been less freaked out.
Since Kazuya is so awful at almost every social situation, I had a feeling he would be an awful texter as well. Seeing him and Chizuru text back and forth was my favorite part of the episode. I think most of us can relate to getting to text your crush a lot. It was nice to see them communicate like normal people for once. It kind of sucked from a technical perspective because all the text had to be translated, so I had to pause and sometimes rewind to read what was said. As expected, though, when Chizuru fell asleep while texting and didn’t immediately text back, Kazuya freaked out.
On another note, Kazuya doesn’t deserve a friend like Kibe. I don’t agree with some of the things he said, but the fact that he said them shows that he’s a ride-or-die friend. He essentially told Kazuya that he understands that he doesn’t matter as much to Kazuya now that he has Chizuru, and that’s cool. I can’t speak for Kazuya on whether that’s true or not, but if it is true, it shouldn’t be. Even if Kazuya and Chizuru were ACTUALLY together, it shouldn’t be true. She might take precedence in his life, but he should still care about Kibe.
Remember when we learned that it had been months since Kazuya heard from Chizuru? Remember how I thought it was weird that Ruka hadn’t done anything either? Turns out, not only was she coming to see him all the time and he was sleeping, but she even attempted to clean up his apartment for him. Kazuya is such an asshole. I think he knows by this point that he will never love Ruka in the way that she loves him. He needs to be honest with her and cut her loose. I know that he’s tried and she didn’t listen, but if I’ve learned anything about Kazuya, it’s that his “trying” is usually half-assed at best.
