English Dub Review: Dark Gathering “Morning Twilight”
Overview (Spoilers Below):
The god who branded Ai takes an interest in the entity that abducted Yayoi’s mother. That can only mean one thing: a dangerous threat now brews on the horizon.
Our Take:
Yayoi and Eiko’s house inspection had gone from bad to worse when Eiko became a victim of the house’s pregnancy curse. By then, Eiko will understand how Keitaro went through as “paranormal bait”. Fortunately, it didn’t take long for Yayoi to rescue Eiko from a fate worse than death and destroy the house’s curse. However, the spirits of the father/daughter duo weren’t so fortunate, as the daughter became lunch for the Angel. As for the father, he’s forced to relive his death repeatedly instead of facing the consequences of his actions. But what really matters is that the gang now has a house to store more Graduates.
However, the paranormal problems continue to arise, as seen in the second half of the episode. Amid the trio’s small yet humorous breather, the episode shifts its focus to Ai’s godly future husband, who sends the embryo ghost to absorb more of its power. For those who have just joined in on its ghostly adventures, the episode reminded them of the series’s primary antagonists: the god seeking Ai as his bride and the embryo ghost that kidnapped Yayoi’s mother. The second half also displays how deadly the embryo ghost is becoming, as it killed Kishimochi and its spirit children, unveiling its true form in the process.
This spells terrible news for Yayoi and the others as they prepare to enter the next S-rank area: The Old I Watergate Bridge. But they would have to collect another Graduate before embarking on another dangerous trek. Regarding its disturbing imagery and exploration of the embryo ghost and Ai’s god husband, the episode concludes its frightening “virgin curse” arc and showcases the ultimate dangers that would serve as the season’s final bosses. Of course, it’s not without a few moments of levity to balance out its disturbing content, including Eiko and Yayoi taking care of Keitaro. Hopefully, by next week, Keitaro will have enough rest to deal with more ghostly terror with Yayoi and Eiko.
