English Dub Review: Psyren “Tavoo”
Overview:
Ageha, Amamiya, and Hiryu reunite in the Psyren world. A voice thunders out, “To those who reach Psyren—the entire world shall be theirs!”
Our Take(Spoilers):
I know that it’s a meme for an anime to have characters that don’t really seem like they’re the age they say they are. Normally, it doesn’t bother me, but when you have a character like Hiryu that looks like a grown-ass man, then it’s a little weird. He’s supposed to be the same age as Ageha and Amamiya, but it doesn’t look like that to me, though maybe I’m being too nitpicky.
This show hasn’t quite hooked me yet, and I’m hopeful it will eventually. One of the main issues is that this is based on a manga that came out in the early 2000’s. Similarly to Hana-Kimi, it feels like this is a show that is coming out at the wrong time. Not to say that a show can’t be made years and years after the source material; we’re still getting adaptations of Frankenstein and all sorts of William Shakespeare works, so certain stories can be timeless. Hana-Kimi is looking to get fully adapted, and I don’t know if that’s going to be the case here. Psyren is collected in sixteen manga volumes, and I don’t see this one season covering all of that, but I do hope it gets fully adapted because there could be something here.
To be honest, it’s too early to decide whether this is going to be bad or not yet. There are a lot of questions I have for the story. Are we in a Matrix situation where the world they’re in now is the real one and the nice world from before was fake? Ageha discovers near the end of this episode that he’s in some version of Japan because he saw Mount Fuji.
I think I’ve read too much adult manga because if I were Ageha, I would not have left Amamiya with him. This is a post-apocalyptic situation, and typically morals are the first thing to go. However, it’s starting to seem like Hiryu is going to be a major character, and he seems to be a better guy than we were initially led to believe. I hope that this show starts to bring me in soon because the premise is interesting, and I’ve seen it get a lot of praise from a lot of manga readers.
