English Dub Review: The Laid-Off Cheat-Granting Mage Enjoys a Second Lease on Life “There’s something I’ve learned from ending up naked twice… When you’re naked, you get bitten twice.”

Overview:

Rein’s old guild learns he dispelled their enchantments, and Cornelius hires an assassin.

Our Take(Spoilers):

Maybe if you’re going to show up to someone’s house when they have an attack dog, you shouldn’t show up naked. Though, to be fair, it could have gone worse; the dog was chewing on Rein’s head when he could have been chewing on something else. Also, I feel bad for Rein because the censorship bar they used for his private area was super small. But this is mostly a comedy show, so I understand why they did it, and it was funny. Most of the jokes in this show have landed for me, and that’s impressive. It takes a lot for an anime to make me laugh out loud, and this has succeeded so far.

Hollis Beck does the voice of Lily, and I haven’t heard her in much, but she does such a fun job with Lily. Whenever Lily gets upset, there’s almost like a crack in her voice that happens, which just adds to the hilarity of the moment. I know that might sound like I’m talking smack about her, but I truly love how she voices Lily. She might be my favorite character, and her voice is a pretty big part of that. Justin Briner is a veteran at this point, and his take on Rein is fantastic. Rein is a dumbass, and everyone knows it. I love hearing Justin voice someone so unapologetically stupid.

I truly hope that Lily isn’t the reason Margaret’s sister died. But if a note that Rein found is anything to go by, then I think she might have. It could have been planted, or maybe there is something more nefarious at work, but the note said, “Lily Flambert killed us,” and that’s not a good sign. Something tells me that she might have hurt the party but was under some sort of mind control or something.

All I know is that this is one of my favorite anime that is airing right now. It’s funny, but it’s also not afraid to go dark. Even parts that are funny can be pretty dark in their own way. When a part of the tunnel the party was in was collapsing, there was a goblin following them, trying to just survive. But Rein swipes it with one of his daggers, and the way that goblin died was laugh-out-loud funny, but when you think about it, that’s pretty dark. I’m loving the balance in this show so far, and I definitely recommend you watch it. I hope that doesn’t change.
