English Dub Review: Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World “Subaru Natsuki”

Overview

With his mental state already in tatters, Subaru finds a book in the archive with his name on it.

Our Take

Picking up from the previous episode, Re:ZERO continues Subaru’s struggle with his missing memories as he searches for an answer to what makes him the person everyone believes him to be. The episode does a great job exploring Subaru’s identity and forcing him to confront the difference between who he thinks he is and who he actually is. Rather than relying on some grand revelation, the story keeps the focus on Subaru himself and the qualities that have carried him this far.

The emotional weight comes from seeing Subaru reflect on everything he has endured throughout the series. The flashbacks reinforce just how much suffering, failure, and determination have shaped his journey, while the dialogue provides a surprisingly powerful look at his character. It’s both depressing and rewarding to see how far he has come, especially as the episode emphasizes one of the story’s biggest themes: learning to accept and appreciate yourself despite your flaws.

Overall, this was easily one of the most emotional episodes of the season and a fantastic character-focused chapter for Subaru. While some of the flashbacks may feel familiar to longtime viewers, they still work in reinforcing the significance of his journey. The episode delivers a heartfelt reflection on who Subaru is, what drives him, and why he continues moving forward, making it a beautiful and meaningful addition to his story.
