English Dub Review: Grow Up Show: Sunflower Circus “Even Higher”

There’s a lot to unpack here but first I want to handle something a little lighthearted. The OP for this song is fantastic. Have you ever had a song stuck in your head but can’t quite place where you heard it? For some reason I had this song playing over and over in my head and when I went to watch today’s episode of Grow Up Show there it was! In case you haven’t looked it up yet, it’s “Yurari Yureru” by NOMELON NOLEMON which is a fascinating band name.
The Sunflower Circus decides to do something different for the finals, they base their performances around The Wizard of Oz. This got me thinking about that story and how I’m pretty sure that’s one of the first isekai stories in history. That and Alice in Wonderland are the first ones I can think of. It also depends on what criteria you have for that type of story. But that is more just an anecdotal thought than something that has bearing on this episode.
You might be wondering why I said WTF for my preview. That’s because this show went in a completely different direction than I thought it was going to go. I think we all thought that Maria was going to die but not only was that not what happened but what did transpire was legitimately mind boggling.
We finally got to see what Mizuki’s father has been up to. He’s apparently a surgeon in the United States, which is honestly crazy when you think about it. I know that Mizuki hasn’t talked to her dad in forever but you would think that she would know if he was a surgeon. Somehow, that’s not even the most surprising thing that happened.
Not only is Mizuki’s father a surgeon but him and Maria got married! That came completely out of nowhere and now Maria is expecting Mizuki to call her “mom” the next time she sees her. Don’t get me wrong I’m glad we didn’t get a sad ending like most things nowadays but this was a little too weird. I can’t say there weren’t any signs of Maria having a thing for Mizuki’s dad and I know that Maria is older than she looks but the age gap might be a little much as well. There’s a whole lot more to talk about when I do my season review, so look forward to that.
