English Dub Review: Chainsmoker Cat “Meow, I’ll Enjoy the Event Too”

Overview:

Yani’s neighbors Yakuneko and Hameneko head to a mystical waterfall-but Hameneko’s selfishness drives Yakuneko to hatch a wild revenge plan.

Our Take:

I don’t know about you guys, but I’m not about to go on a huge road trip to a place if I don’t know that it’s going to be open. So when Yakuneko takes Hameneko on a trip to a waterfall, only to find that it’s closed because of a recent landslide I can’t help but feel like that was a silly thing to do. But when we’re talking about a show that has cat people in it I suppose asking for a semblance of realism is too much at times.

The character I’m starting to feel awful for is the landlord, Ootani. Yani gets a part-time job, and of course it happens to be on Valentine’s Day. She takes care of someone’s dog and for some reason picks up the dog’s poop in a bag and keeps it. She then offers to give it to Ootani and because of the day it is he thinks that it’s Valentine’s chocolate. To be fair, Yani says that it’s poop but she says it in such a way that I can understand why he thinks she might be joking. He realized it wasn’t a joke after he ate it though.

Apparently Ootani is only into beastfolk or something because when he catches Tatsuno in a revealing outfit he maintains a boner so long as she keeps the cat ears on. But it immediately goes away the second she takes them off. It was a funny series of events but it was also pretty odd. I understand he has some weird fetishes but he also gets shit on way too much.

Trying to figure out what timeframe things are happening is another struggle of mine. We went from Valentine’s Day to April Fool’s by the end of the episode. Yani tried to prank Nishi by telling her that she has cancer and only a year to live. I don’t know about you but if someone decided to “prank” me like that I would be pissed. She eventually pranks her sister by using Nishi’s brother in her prank to say that she’s pregnant and he’s the father.

I get that this is basically a gross version of a slice of life show but I would like a little more going on. With there only being two episodes left I don’t see anything major changing but at least it’s been slightly less gross than it was.
