English Dub Review: You and I Are Polar Opposites “Valentine’s Day”

Overview:

Though Yamada wants to confess his feelings to Nishi, he can’t find the right time. The two of them go on a date, and as Nishi turns things over in her mind, her feelings for Yamada swell. She blurts out, “I love you!” Yamada is taken aback by the sudden turn of events, but… Valentine’s Day arrives, and Suzuki gives Tani homemade cookies, but his too-honest reaction sends her into a sulk.

Our Take(Spoilers):

In case you don’t know, Valentine’s Day works a little differently in Japan. It’s part of two different holidays; first comes Valentine’s Day, where the girls give guys chocolate. Sometimes it’s a confession of sorts, and they give the guy they like chocolate. But there is also a thing called “obligatory chocolate,” where they give it to guys in their class out of obligation. Then, a month later, on March 14th, comes White Day, when the guys reciprocate and give a gift back to the girls who gave them chocolate.

I felt I needed to explain to avoid any kind of slander that might come Yamada’s way. He bumped into Nishi during the day and already had a bunch of chocolate, but it was all obligatory. Luckily, I think she also understood that because she didn’t seem upset and told him to meet her after school. They’ve become such a cute couple, and I loved seeing Nishi blurt out her love for Yamada. It was also kind of cute how he was slightly upset that he wasn’t the first one to say it. Being the first one to say “I love you” in a relationship can be scary, but if it goes your way, there’s no better feeling on Earth. I’m so glad for these two.

Azuma gave Taira a piece of gum and jokingly said that it counts, so she will expect something on White Day. I really hope that Taira does give her something because, with how cute Nishi and Yamada are, I can only hope that Taira and Azuma follow suit. These two have way different insecurities than Nishi and Yamada, though. Taira has trust issues, and I think Azuma could confess to him, and he would assume that she’s messing with him.

As much as I love seeing side characters get a lot of love, I am a little sad that Suzuki and Tani seem to be getting less and less involved. The most we see them is Suzuki giving Tani cookies and not reacting exactly as she would like. But ultimately they’re still a great couple, and seeing Suzuki root for Yamada and Nishi makes me feel like she’s one of us.
