English Dub Review: The Exiled Heavy Knight Knows How to Game the System “Golden Raana Farming”
Overview
Elymas uses his game knowledge to exploit the weaknesses of the elusive Golden Raana.
Our Take
Picking up from the previous episode, Elymas and Ruche set their sights on the elusive Golden Raana, which is basically a shiny gold Toad, with Elymas using his knowledge of the game to devise a strategy around its unusual behavior and weaknesses. Their plan makes clever use of Ruche’s newly acquired abilities, allowing her to demonstrate her potential in battle finally. The encounter itself is brief but satisfying, especially when Ruche lands a devastating critical hit, and the pair walks away with valuable rewards. More importantly, Elymas’s faith in her abilities gives Ruche a much-needed boost of confidence, further establishing their chemistry as a surprisingly effective duo.
Unfortunately, the episode’s biggest problem is once again its pacing. Far too much time is spent recapping previous events, repeating scenes, explaining RPG mechanics, and having characters discuss statistics and abilities that could have been conveyed far more naturally. Ruche’s exaggerated reactions can also become grating, while the excessive camera movement, reused footage, awkward animation, and distracting visual flourishes often make the presentation feel more complicated than it needs to be. There are some genuinely interesting ideas here, particularly the distinction between the game’s mechanics and the reality of this world, but the anime continues to stretch relatively simple material far beyond what it needs.
Overall, there’s a good episode buried underneath all the padding. Elymas’s tactical thinking is fun to watch, Ruche gets a worthwhile moment to shine, and their growing partnership remains one of the more enjoyable aspects of the series. However, the constant recaps, lengthy exposition, and sluggish pacing make what should be a straightforward monster-hunting adventure feel unnecessarily drawn out. There’s clearly potential in the story and its game-inspired mechanics, but the anime desperately needs to trust its audience a little more and spend less time explaining the game and more time actually playing it.
