English Dub Review: Skeleton Knight in Another World “The Sea Hears the Tale of the Tragic Kunoichi’s Past”

Overview

As Arc and the group travel to the southern continent, Chiyome shares her past with Sasuke.

Our Take

Picking up from the previous episode, Arc and his companions finally set sail from Landfrea Port toward the southern continent, giving the episode some classic fantasy adventure vibes. Arc is thrilled when a Kraken attacks the ship, although his excitement is tempered by the realization that his armor would make swimming rather difficult. After quickly defeating the creature, the group arrives in the Beastman kingdom of Fobnach, where Arc and Chiyome find an amusingly practical way to make some extra travel money. Meanwhile, Ariane discovers that Danka has already left town, while Sasuke’s mysterious activities raise plenty of questions.

The episode’s biggest focus is Chiyome, as Tsubone recounts her tragic past and explains her close bond with Sasuke. Learning more about Chiyome’s childhood and what motivated her to become a warrior adds some welcome depth to her character, while Tsubone’s tendency to embellish the story provides plenty of comedic relief. The episode also balances the heavier material with Arc’s enthusiasm for fighting the Kraken and the resulting squid-related antics, making for some genuinely entertaining moments.

Overall, this was a solid character-focused episode that moves the adventure forward while giving Chiyome some much-needed development. The seafaring setting and Kraken encounter offer a fun change of scenery, even if the ocean adventure itself is over rather quickly. With the group now in unfamiliar territory and Sasuke’s actions becoming increasingly mysterious, the episode does a good job of setting up what comes next without giving too much away.
