Our Take
Picking up from the previous episode, Myne’s latest adventure begins with a surprisingly strong emphasis on world-building, particularly surrounding mana, the gods, and the mysterious properties of the world she inhabits. While the fantasy-beast hunting and resource-gathering can feel repetitive compared to the series’ stronger material, there are still plenty of amusing and intriguing moments. Myne’s adorable winter outfit, her hilariously ineffective attempt to fight a massive beast, and her reactions to the creatures provide plenty of charm while the episode hints at larger mysteries without giving too much away.
More importantly, the episode continues developing the relationship between Myne and Ferdinand in subtle but meaningful ways. Ferdinand’s usually rigid personality gradually softens around her, while his brief reflection on his childhood adds context to why her presence affects him so deeply. Their interactions highlight one of the series’ best qualities: Myne’s unconventional outlook constantly challenges Ferdinand’s rigid expectations. Even something as simple as sharing a meal carries unexpected significance, making their growing bond one of the story’s highlights. Unfortunately, the anime’s rushed pacing once again works against these moments by condensing some of the context behind them.
Overall, this was an enjoyable episode with worthwhile world-building and character development, even if the fantasy-gathering segments are considerably less engaging than the political, commercial, and book-related material that makes Ascendance of a Bookworm stand out. The animation and direction also struggle to make the action exciting, making the repetitive monster-hunting feel more like a side quest than an essential part of the story. Still, the episode shines when focusing on Myne, Ferdinand, and the increasingly fascinating mysteries surrounding their world.
