Season Review: The Legend of Vox Machina Season Four

Overview:

A year after the Chroma Conclave, Vox Machina has separated, searching for love, family, and purpose. But as always, the call of adventure is a breath away. When a long-slumbering evil awakens to threaten the realm, they must reunite to take on an epic foe.

Our Take(Spoilers):

Escalation is a big thing in fiction, especially if you watch anime; it’s big there. Even still, I was wondering how they would explain a villain that was even bigger and more powerful than the Chroma Conclave. One cool bit of trivia is that the Whispered One is apparently a stand-in for the famous Dungeons and Dragons villain, Vecna. They couldn’t use that name, obviously, so instead we got the Whispered One, and honestly, I think this might be the “best” villain yet.

The things I didn’t like about this season were few and far between, but let’s discuss them. I didn’t like how little we got to see of Scanlan, but I’m sure there was a good reason. Pike going on a villain speedrun was cool, but I didn’t like how short it was. The one thing I haven’t said much about is Vax and how his character has developed.

The character development in this show is some of the best I’ve seen, and I’m not saying what has happened with Vax is bad. It feels like out of all the characters, he’s changed the most. He used to be pretty selfish and never put others first, and definitely wouldn’t be someone who would follow the will of a goddess willingly. But now he does whatever the Matron of Ravens wants and seems to put her first, even over Keyleth. If you’ve watched the season, you’ll know that he told the Whispered One to fuck off when offered a deal that everyone else accepted, and now he’s been disintegrated. I don’t think he’ll stay dead, but if he does, I’ll be a little disappointed.

Back when this show first premiered, I was hesitant to get into it even though it hit all my interests. The main reason was that I was worried that we wouldn’t get to see how this story ends. Luckily, this show has been a smash hit, and we’re going to get a fifth (and final) season. The only downside is that it’s looking like it will be a long wait. With the way this season ended, the wait is going to be hard because this had the cliffhanger to end all cliffhangers.

I used the tagline legendary because I looked back at my old reviews, and I used that term for all of them. It was embarrassing, but now that we’re four seasons in, I have to admit that the term fits because it is legendary. Between this, The Mighty Nein, and the video game Dispatch, Critical Role Studios is on a hell of a run. I hope all of their campaigns get animated, and with how well things are going, I think that is looking likely.
