OUR TAKE

It’s THE END of Rick and Morty: The End! But as we’ve discussed, it’s not the end of this storyline. Despite the end of last issue, Rick and Morty didn’t actually die, but that’s no going to be a surprise to anyone. Nor is it a surprise that this story couldn’t end with the two being quickly found by Parmesan and having one last confrontation, this time against a clone made up of half Rick and half Morty, who is a bit of a threat for a second there before it kills itself in a fit of self-loathing, likely coming from Rick’s side of its DNA. That just leaves dealing with the universe that’s been pursuing them all this time, which Rick gives a button to finally merge with her beloved…which she no longer wants to since he became a baby, so Morty pushes it, turning her into a little girl version of herself. I am just not going to try to square that circle since this thing is finally over! Except, like we all know, no it’s not, as C-137, the universe that our Rick originally hails from, appears from a portal to do…SOMETHING. Something important I assume. And with that, this year long comic storyline that started a year ago next week, and this comic run that began over a decade ago, is down to its final installment.

I haven’t been keeping up with the Rick and Morty comics that far back, and probably wouldn’t have if not for being assigned this, but even then, I definitely feel how momentous this is. Even if Rick and Morty as a franchise has long since gone over the hill in its popularity, it’s still a world that is so vibrant and full of potential for new stories and things to say. That’s not why it got like ten seasons worth of renewals since that was more about taking advantage of its peak of popularity, but it did allow it to stay present in people’s minds and for those writing the show, the games, the comics, and who knows what else to be able to go absolutely wild with just about whatever they wanted to do with these characters. The show itself is in the midst of its ninth season, so hopefully that means the comics won’t be totally gone for the remainder, but after the next issue, they won’t be at Oni Press, so let’s see how they choose to bring their take on this whole thing to a close.
