Review: My Adventures with Superman “Party Animals”
OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)
One month after the fight against Henshaw, the gang goes to a humanitarian gala, but Jimmy’s date turns out to be a terrorist. Must be a day that ends with Y.
OUR TAKE
Onto the second half of the season, and even though Clark is out of commission as Superman from the events of last episode, crime never takes a holiday. Luckily the potential fun of these stories is that, when the title character can’t fight (at least to their full capacity), that gives everyone else a chance to shine. Not that it feels much different from typical episodes since Lois, Jimmy, and Kara have been pretty active in all of the other episodes this season. And Clark doesn’t shy away from stepping up when he needs to, even without powers, which helps to show that being Superman is a matter of character. Plus we get some hints as to where his arc is headed next through some odd visions he gets, though that doesn’t stop him from getting down on himself. It’s totally understandable for him to be in a funk when what he normally did to help tons of people all the time is suddenly impossible, at least for the moment. I gave this plot some crap last time because of how obvious it is that he’ll get his powers back, but if they’re going to do it, these emotions about feeling lost without that power are a valid way to go at this early stage.
What I continue to have less and less patience for is the drama between Kara and Jimmy, which seems to come to a head this episode, at least in terms of Jimmy continuously dating weird science women (who incidentally are Wonder Woman villains) who turn out to be terrorists who want to experiment on him and others. And then there’s just this show’s bad streak of samey villains in general, but I digress. This episode ends with Jimmy admitting he has feelings for Kara, who is understandably pissed because he’s been distancing himself from her by dating all of these women SPECIFICALLY TO MAKE HER JEALOUS. After she MADE CLEAR SHE LIKED HIM. I genuinely hope they don’t end up together by the end of this because that would send all the wrong messages, and also I’m just kind of sick of this version of Jimmy. Anyway, we also see Bizarro stepping up after apparently getting a job as an ice cream vendor, which will be helpful since our main four appear to have been kidnapped by the fifth dimensional imp Mxyzptlk. And we’ll get into that next time!
