Review: Breaking Bear “Bear-Ly Legal”
Overview:
Tubi has recently debuted its latest adult animated series, Breaking Bear, which sees a trio of bears cut their teeth in the drug game after a hibernation. Things start out with “Bear-Ly Legal.”
Our Take:
Things start out when three bear siblings wake up from hibernation. We meet slacker Jer, neuortic Alistair, and protective, if codependent, Blair.
If you like your cartoons blue, it starts out with a joke about one of the brothers waking up to five-month-long morning wood. And a simulated ejaculation joke involving a Twinkie (granted, after watching the trailer, one is grateful it was just a Twinkie.) This isn’t going to be Goldilocks meets Yogi Bear.
However, in true cartoon bear fashion, they still search for food. Unfortunately for them, humans have gentrified the forest. And the rangers really don’t like bears taking human food. They’ve got tasers and they aren’t afraid to use them.
The bears then show mixed reactions to humans. The siblings acknowledge the evils of the human race, from slavery to vegan cheese. Blair feels it’s best to want nothing to do with them. However, her brothers have a “hate the artist, love the art” mentality, but with food.
In their search for food, the two find delicious rotissere chicken. And meth. Complete with a Walter White parody who explains that most TV drug dealers are good guys. This is all the bears need to hear to start selling drugs and save their forest. Well, they have a season to somehow make that work. Well, with Jer developing a taste for human flesh, they at least have a surefire way to discard any pesky bodies.
Overall, it’s an interesting way to start the season. Humans might not appreciate the representation of either an enemy or afternoon snack to our protagonists, but the talking bear community will just eat it up.
One of the series’ biggest draws is its star-studded cast. These includes stars known for voice-acting and otherwise. These include Sarah Michelle Gellar, Brendan Fraser, Matthew Lillard, Annie Murphy, and Josh Gad, among others. Whether you like to hear a familiar voice, or be impressed by an actor’s range, it’s fun just to listen to.
