Independent Animated Comedy ‘Isla Monstro’ Brings Island Chaos to San Diego Comic-Con 2026

Following its digital release across major video-on-demand platforms, the scrappy, cult-favorite adult animated sci-fi comedy Isla Monstro is heading straight to San Diego Comic-Con 2026.

Produced by Abyssmal Entertainment and distributed by The Nacelle Company, Isla Monstro made its VOD debut on June 30, landing on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Google Play, and more. Now, the filmmakers and voice cast are taking over the Gaslamp Quarter and the convention floor for a weekend packed with panels, exclusive merchandise, and an off-site party.

From Lockdown Experiment to Cult Hit

Directed and animated by Steven Shea (Surviving Supercon), Isla Monstro owes its existence to pure DIY determination. Conceived as a self-taught animation project during the pandemic lockdowns, Shea wrote the feature alongside lead actor James Schrader (best known as the face of Dr. Squatch Soap).

The film’s absurd premise follows Duke (Schrader), a serial scheme-artist who accidentally falls off a cruise ship and washes up on a top-secret, abandoned government island. There, he discovers a bizarre population of forgotten 1980s DARPA “super-soldier” experiments—ranging from a giant floating eyeball scientist to a goth jellyfish-shark hybrid. Seeing dollar signs instead of danger, Duke convinces the mutants to turn the island into a world-class luxury resort, putting them on a collision course with both the Miami drug cartel and the U.S. military.

The film boasts a massive ensemble voice cast of cult icons and animation veterans, including Harland Williams, James Marsters, John DiMaggio, Maurice LaMarche, Barry Bostwick, Juliana Harkavy, and Spencer Grammer.

SDCC 2026 Event Schedule

 The ‘Isla Monstro’ Tiki Bar Booth

  • Location: Floor Booth #2002

  • What to Expect: The booth will be themed like a tropical island tiki bar, stocking physical editions of the film across Blu-ray, DVD, and VHS, alongside a brand-new tie-in comic book, official soundtrack releases (available on vinyl and cassette), and convention-exclusive merchandise. Cast and crew signings will take place at the booth throughout the weekend.

Pardy Harder in San Diego’ Party

  • When: Thursday, July 23 | 9:00 PM – Midnight

  • Location: Madhouse Comedy Club (801 Fourth Ave, Gaslamp Quarter)

  • Details: Open to the public (21+, no cover charge, and no SDCC badge required). The event features island-themed cocktails, giveaway prizes, and special guest appearances from the cast and crew.

‘Isla Monstro Unleashed’ Panel

  • When: Saturday, July 25 | 7:45 PM – 8:45 PM

  • Location: Room 6BCF

  • Panelists: Hosted by Danielle DeNicola, the panel features director/animator Steven Shea, composer Robert Reider, lead illustrator Logan Van Der Wolf, and cast members James Schrader, LeeAnna Vamp (Ghosted), Gigi Edgley (Farscape), and comedian Atif Myers, with additional surprise guests to be announced. The team will break down the process of creating an independent animated feature from home and showcase upcoming brand expansions, including zines and an in-development video game.
