‘House of the Dragon’ Star Matthew Needham Cast as The Joker in ‘Batman: Caped Crusader’ Season 2

At San Diego Comic-Con, Prime Video officially announced that British actor Matthew Needham—best known for his role as the cunning, club-footed power broker Larys Strong in HBO’s House of the Dragon—will voice The Joker in Season 2 of Batman: Caped Crusader.

The news broke during the show’s Comic-Con panel alongside executive producers James Tucker and Geoffrey Thorne, as well as lead voice cast members Hamish Linklater (Bruce Wayne / Batman) and Jamie Chung (Harley Quinn). Season 2 is set to premiere all 10 episodes on Friday, July 31, 2026 on Prime Video.

A “Colder, Calmer” European Take on the Villain

While the villain made a brief, shadowy cameo at the end of Season 1 (where he was voiced in a single line by John DiMaggio), Needham is stepping in for a significantly expanded, primary role in Season 2.

Speaking at the panel, Needham revealed that the showrunners asked him to steer away from traditional, bombastic iterations of the character in favor of a distinctly restrained tone:

“They specifically wanted a European Joker,” Needham explained. “I kept wanting to do classic Joker who’s laughing and over the top, but they kept directing me to go colder, go calmer.”

Needham noted that he drew inspiration from classic suspense thrillers, specifically citing the eerie, unnerving phone calls from the 1979 horror film When a Stranger Calls. Executive producers also clarified that despite Harley Quinn’s prominent presence in Season 1, this 1940s-era reimagining of The Joker and Harley operate completely independently of one another with no shared origin story.

Season 2 Premieres July 31 Alongside New Luna Game

Executive produced by Bruce Timm, J.J. Abrams, and The Batman director Matt Reeves, Batman: Caped Crusader debuted in 2024 to critical acclaim for its period-accurate 1940s noir aesthetic and hard-boiled, detective-focused take on the Dark Knight mythos.

Alongside the Season 2 premiere on July 31, Amazon also announced Batman: Caped Crusader – Chronicles, an exclusive cloud-gaming tie-in title launching on Amazon Luna for Prime members the same day.
