Our Take
Picking up right where the previous season left off, 100 Girlfriends returns and wastes no time reminding viewers why it’s one of anime’s most unapologetically chaotic comedies. Rentaro Aijo and his ever-growing “harem family” return in spectacular fashion through a hilariously meta opening packed with fourth-wall breaks, pop culture references, and rapid-fire jokes, all while showcasing the wildly different personalities of his girlfriends. The setup leans heavily into the series’ signature brand of absurdity, confidently embracing the madness that fans have come to expect.
The second half shifts its focus toward the episode’s newest addition, Chiyo In, though the episode’s title makes it fairly obvious where the story is headed. As if introducing Rentaro’s younger middle-school cousin wasn’t enough to spark conversation, the series openly acknowledges just how unconventional the premise is, turning what could’ve been an awkward situation into another opportunity for self-aware comedy. While this particular development will undoubtedly be polarizing for obvious reasons, the episode never loses sight of the heartfelt sincerity that defines Rentaro’s character beneath all the wacky & outrageous humor.
Overall, this is an incredibly strong return that doubles down on everything that makes 100 Girlfriends so entertaining. The relentless comedy, clever meta humor, energetic performances, expressive animation, and standout opening and ending themes make for a premiere that’s consistently hilarious from beginning to end. Whether it’s poking fun at itself, celebrating its unforgettable cast, or pushing its already ridiculous premise even further, Season 3 opens with another wildly entertaining episode that perfectly sets the tone for the chaos still to come.
