DC’s Rated-R Animated Epic ‘Batman: Knightfall Part 1’ Sets Late Summer Digital and Blu-ray Release

Thirty-three years after Bane famously “Broke the Bat” in the pages of DC Comics, one of Gotham’s most legendary comic book storylines is finally getting the sprawling, animated treatment fans have demanded for decades. Warner Bros. Animation and DC Home Entertainment have officially announced release dates for Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall, revealing an uncompromising, rated-R animated adaptation arriving late this summer.

The film—the first chapter in a planned three-part animated film event—will drop on major Digital platforms on August 25, 2026, followed by a physical home media release on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on September 8, 2026.

Gotham Under Siege

Directed by Jeff Wamester (Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths) from a script by Jeremy Adams (Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons), Part 1 adapts the grueling opening act of the seminal 1993 comic event.

Rather than engaging the Dark Knight in direct combat immediately, the tactical mastermind Bane orchestrates a mass breakout at Arkham Asylum, destroying its walls and unleashing Gotham’s most dangerous lunatics simultaneously. As an increasingly exhausted Bruce Wayne works around the clock to recapture rogues like Mr. Freeze, The Riddler, Firefly, and The Ventriloquist, Bane systematically studies his target—waiting for the precise moment Batman reaches physical and mental collapse to strike inside Wayne Manor.

The official trailer confirms the film has earned a strict R-rating for “strong bloody violence,” signaling that the studio isn’t pulling any punches when depicting the brutal, bone-crunching confrontation between Bruce Wayne and his venom-fueled foil.

A Star-Studded Voice Cast

The animated event features an impressive ensemble bringing Gotham’s protectors and tormentors to life:

  • Anson Mount (Star Trek: Strange New Worlds) steps into the cowl as a battered, overworked Bruce Wayne / Batman.

  • Michael Mando (Better Call Saul, Far Cry 3) lends his terrifying intensity to Bane.

  • Pablo Schreiber (Halo, Den of Thieves) joins as the dogmatic antihero Jean-Paul Valley, better known as Azrael.

The trailer heavily highlights Robin urging an exhausted Batman to seek help from Azrael, setting up Valley’s pivotal and controversial role in the remaining chapters of the trilogy.

Special Features and What’s Ahead

Physical 4K UHD and Blu-ray editions will feature high-definition DTS-HD audio along with an exclusive behind-the-scenes featurette titled “Breaking the Bat: Adapting Knightfall,” where the filmmakers break down the monumental task of translating the iconic 1990s crossover into an animated trilogy.

Fans won’t have to wait years to see the rest of the saga unfold. Warner Bros. has confirmed that Part 2 (presumably adapting Knightquest) will premiere later in late 2026, with Part 3 (KnightsEnd) slated to wrap up the trilogy in early 2027.
