English Dub Review: Wistoria: Wand and Sword “The First Bloom”

Overview (Spoilers Below):
At last, Will sets foot in the tower where Elfaria awaits.  His excitement at seeing the town on the first floor is short-lived.  The Bloom begins, and Sion, Colette, Lihanna, and Wignall, who were all scouted as students, are welcomed into their respective factions.  Will and the others learn the truth—without a faction, they will spend their lives as cogs in the machine supporting the tower.

Our Take:
Out of pure luck and his discovery of a new spell, Will is able to reach the next chapter of his quest to reunite with Elfaria: the tower.  Of course, the journey inside the tower will be a much bigger challenge than his schoolwork and final exams.  The most notable reason is that the Magia Vanders can be tough to please, as they seek the best magic users to stand alongside them.  This is evident in The First Bloom, a series of trials where the graduates are placed in each faction.  However, those who aren’t chosen are given another chance to prove themselves by fighting the Zoctonias.  Unfortunately, Will and Julius are among the few who didn’t get one, despite Elfaria’s request to scout Will.
With the magic school aspect out of the way, this gives the show’s second season a chance to spice up its premise through Will’s ascent to the top of the tower.  The narrative of Will seeking acceptance and his resilience remains as he seeks approval from the Magia Vander, but with the difference that he can now use both his sword and his newfound magic.  There’s also the matter of Julius, who also seeks acceptance from the Vander after being the only person who didn’t get scouted by a faction.  By the way, Julius’s reaction to Elfaria’s refusal was pretty hilarious, along with Elfaria’s temper due to her not being able to scout Will.  Both Will and Julius certainly have the same goal, though they have to work together to reach it.  With its continued blend of action and comedy, “The First Bloom” undoubtedly shows promising, even exciting, developments for Will’s progression through the tower and the show’s familiar concept.
