Marvel’s Mutants Return Across Time: ‘X-Men ’97’ Season 2 Set for July 1 Premiere on Disney+
Fans of Marvel Animation’s critically acclaimed revival have cause to celebrate. The Emmy-nominated hit series X-Men ’97 is officially returning for its highly anticipated second season. Accompanied by a brand-new trailer and poster, Marvel has confirmed that the 9-episode season will premiere on Disney+ on July 1, 2026.
The announcement follows the massive global success of the show’s freshman run. As one of the most-watched Disney+ Original animated series based on hours streamed worldwide, X-Men ’97 proved to be far more than just a brief wave of millennial nostalgia. The series currently boasts a “Certified Fresh” 99% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, setting an incredibly high bar for the upcoming episodes.
A Scattered Team Faces a Timeless Threat
Season 2 picks up immediately after the high-stakes, multiversal cliffhangers of the first season’s finale. According to the official synopsis, the heroic mutant team is shattered and separated:
“X-Men ’97 Season 2 continues with the heroic mutant team of X-Men, divided and thrown across different eras in time as they struggle to navigate their return home. Meanwhile, back in the 1990s, suspicious foes and new strains of mutant intolerance are on the rise in the wake of the X-Men’s absence.”
The newly released trailer showcases the team fighting an uphill battle across alternate timelines, highlighting a prominent clash against the historic Marvel villain Apocalypse.

The upcoming season features the return of its powerhouse voice cast, which includes:
-
Ross Marquand as Professor X
-
Matthew Waterson as Magneto
-
Ray Chase as Cyclops
-
Jennifer Hale as Jean Grey
-
Alison Sealy-Smith as Storm
-

Behind the scenes, the creative engine remains intact. The series is executive produced by Marvel Studios heavyweights Kevin Feige, Brad Winderbaum, and Louis D’Esposito, alongside Dana Vasquez-Eberhardt. Notably, original X-Men: The Animated Series creators Julia Lewald, Eric Lewald, and Larry Houston serve as executive producers for this season as well.
Jake Castorena returns as supervising producer, with episodic direction helmed by Emmett Yonemura and Chase Conley. The Season 2 scripts were penned by a collaborative writing room consisting of JB Ballard, Bailey Moore, Antony Sellitti, Brian Ford Sullivan, Mariah Wilson, and former head writer Beau DeMayo—who completed his work on the scripts prior to his departure from Marvel.
With the mutant world thrown into chaos across the past, present, and future, X-Men ’97 looks poised to deliver another action-packed, emotionally heavy season when it lands on screens this July.
