English Dub Review: Wistoria: Wand and Sword “One Single Magic Spell”
Overview (Spoilers Below):
Rosti sacrifices himself to protect Will. The sight causes Will to lose himself, but Workner swoops in to save him. Edward and the other mages put their lives on the line, but the city’s defenses begin to collapse, and enemies close in. As Will laments his lack of magic, Finn appears before him carrying a sword. Will possesses but a single spell. Finn asks Will its name and extends a sword to him.
Our Take:
Failing a rigged exam from Edward is already bad enough for the sword-wielding student. However, Edward did get a taste of his own medicine while protecting one of the dwarves later in the episode. Now, poor Will has to deal with losing Rosti, who sacrificed himself to protect Will from the Devander, and the problems keep getting worse from here on out. If I were to choose between failing an exam and losing a close friend as the worst pain to receive, the latter would be my top choice, hands down. This episode highlights Will’s vulnerability and lack of self-control, as his dream of reuniting with Elfaria slips away, and the danger his friends put themselves in to protect him.
While Will is quite skilled with his sword, as seen in season one, season two shows that it’s also his humanity and self-doubt that make Will one of the most beloved underdog protagonists in recent memory. With the season already in full swing in terms of stakes, it’s nice to see the show continue to make its character moments as engaging as the action. Will is undoubtedly no exception, thanks to the episode’s exploration of his self-doubt over his lack of magic and Corey Wilder’s effective vocal performance. Elfaria also got her chance to shine in this episode, in which she stands up to the Magia Vander, who are doing nothing to protect the students, highlighting her strong feelings towards Will. Thankfully, Will won’t be suffering for long, thanks to a shocking discovery about his true potential and even the return of Finn.
