English Dub Review: That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime “The Avatar Team is Formed”
OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)
As Rimuru and his select team beef up their enemy avatars to fight back Green Fury, Mariabel thinks on how she was reincarnated in this world and used her special power to build her connections, slowly plotting her next move against Tempest.
OUR TAKE
Good news, we got some more focus on Mariabel and development on her next steps against Rimuru and Tempest! We even get the most insight into her past than we’ve ever gotten, revealing that she, like Rimuru, Hinata, Yuuki, and Masayuki, is a human from our world who died and reincarnated in this one. However, unlike Rimuru who was a meager salaryman prior to being the victim of a random stabbing, Mariabel was part, and eventually head, of a prestigious, influential, and powerful family, apparently being in control of numerous key decisions during (based on the look of the flashbacks) the 20th century. She lived a full life and died peacefully at old age surrounded by her loved ones…and then appeared here, as a baby, in yet another important family. There’s being born on third base, and then there’s being born inches away from home where even a step gets you fifty home runs. And because she apparently wasn’t lucky enough, she also was given an especially powerful skill of “Greed”, which allows her to manipulate the greed in people’s hearts to her will, though apparently you can realize what she’s doing if you’re strong enough. That sounds pretty overpowered, especially since no one in Tempest really knows anything about it or her, but it at the very least shows that she is a massive threat with this power and her family connections.
Bad news, back in Tempest, we’re still on the FUCKING DUNGEON PLOT that has nothing to do with anything happening with Mariabel or the Rossos. I mean, look, it was clear that they needed at least one more episode on this close out whatever the hell was going on with Green Fury, who may as well be an army of floating lamps for all the personality they collectively have. And as mentioned last time, the conflict this whole matter hinges on is basically no conflict at all, there is simply nothing at stake if Green Fury is able to make it to a higher level room of the dungeon before its bosses are put back in. Closing down for maintenance is the most common thing in the world for businesses similar to what this dungeon has been set up as, and while yeah, it’s not a great look to do that so soon into it being open, it really can’t possibly be that big a hit when this is literally the only dungeon like this in this entire world. But luckily, with this matter resolved, there’s only a little bit of acknowledgement of this plot next time, and then hopefully, HOPEFULLY, we are on to greener plot pastures. Also, the new movie is in theaters now so go check that out!
