English Dub Review: That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime “New Days”
OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)
After a successful first festival in Tempest (and presumably surviving whatever happened in the movie that’s not out yet), Rimiru and his team assess their next moves, as well as further work on the dungeon they made for adventurers who seem to not be getting past enough to fully enjoy it.
OUR TAKE
It’s a good time to be a Slime fan, as not only do they have the show’s second movie to look forward to (which apparently takes place between the end of last season and this one), but the fourth season of the anime is upon us with apparently FIVE COURS, making it the longest season yet, and the first two happening back to back! Personally, the term “cours” has always bugged me because I can’t seem to find a consistent definition, and the usage of it tends to just overcomplicate what it’s trying to explain. In this case, I’m pretty sure it means that the next couple dozen episodes will air over the next two “seasons” of anime, the Spring one that started earlier this month in April and the Summer one that starts in July. That would be about as long as a typical season of this show, so why not just call that Season 4 and the rest Season 5? Is this story arc really going to be so long that it would count the next sixty episodes as one season? Well, apparently so, in which case I guess I should be expecting some big things to happen this time around, especially since they sure as shit didn’t in the last season.
I do not remember last season fondly, like at all. The first half was a whole lot of cameras panning across conference rooms as long and methodical planning meetings occurred to discuss a mountain of miscellaneous things happening across the kingdoms. All of which DID play into the larger chess match of Rimiru and the rest of Tempest working to solidify their own kingdom for monster folk while forces around them worked to combat and invalidate it through underhanded economic tactics and manipulating others to directly attack them, but the talking heavily overweighed the action by quite a bit and I grew very bored very quickly. The OP seems to promise more of a faster pace, but so did the first OP of the last season, so I am skeptical. And then there’s the ED, which focuses on the pint sized Mariabell Rosso, presumably the main antagonist for this season, walking around a fountain of blood while some gold and sparkly fluid or sand streams out of her dress. Based on the music, this seems to be trying to be chilling when it really just becomes…odd. Not looking forward to seeing that for the next few months, but here we go. I have no idea why I keep getting picked to cover this show, especially when there is often so little to say, but I can only hope the movie is a bit better.
