Lesbian Space Princess Gets UK Distro

Get ready to set coordinates for the gayest corner of the cosmos. Peccadillo Pictures has officially announced that the award-winning animated feature Lesbian Space Princess will warp into UK and Irish cinemas starting 22nd May, 2026.

Fresh off a triumphant festival run—including a Teddy Award at the Berlin International Film Festival and the Audience Award for Best Australian Feature at the Sydney Film Festival—the film is being hailed as a riotous, neon-soaked breakthrough for queer animation.

The Plot: A Breakup of Galactic Proportions

The story follows Princess Saira, the introverted daughter of the flamboyant lesbian Queens of Planet Clitopolis. Saira’s world is turned upside down when her bounty-hunter girlfriend, Kiki, dumps her for being “too needy.”

However, heartbreak quickly turns into a high-stakes rescue mission. When Kiki is kidnapped by the Straight White Maliens—the forgotten incels of the future—Saira is forced to leave her comfortable bubble. The ransom? Her royal labrys, the most powerful weapon known to lesbian-kind. The catch? She doesn’t actually have it.

Accompanied by a “problematic” sentient spaceship and a gay-pop runaway named Willow, Saira embarks on a 24-hour inter-gay-lactic race against time that doubles as a journey of self-discovery.

A Candy-Coloured Creative Triumph

Written and directed by South Australian duo Leela Varghese and Emma Hough Hobbs, the film is a celebration of LGBTQIA+ and culturally diverse voices. The animation style is described as a “candy-coloured joy,” utilizing a bold, expressive palette that matches its irreverent, laugh-out-loud script.

An All-Star Voice Cast

The film boasts a powerhouse ensemble of Australian and international talent, blending rising stars with comedy legends:

  • Shabana Azeez (Birdeater) as Princess Saira

  • Bernie Van Tiel (Class of ’07)

  • Gemma Chua Tran (Heartbreak High)

  • Richard Roxburgh (Elvis, Rake)

  • Aunty Donna (Big Ol’ House of Fun)

  • Madeleine Sami (Deadloch)

  • Jordan Raskopolous (The Strange Chores)

  • Kween Kong (RuPaul’s Drag Race)

Why It Matters

Lesbian Space Princess represents a significant shift in adult animation, moving away from cynical or gritty tropes to embrace a “riotous” and celebratory tone. By centering a diverse, queer narrative within a classic sci-fi adventure framework, Varghese and Hough Hobbs have created a film that is as politically resonant as it is absurdly funny.

Whether you’re in it for the satirical take on “Straight White Maliens,” the high-energy gay-pop soundtrack, or the heartfelt growth of its introverted lead, this is the animated event of the summer.

Lesbian Space Princess opens in UK and Irish cinemas on 22nd May.
