English Dub Review: My Hero Academia: Vigilantes “Farewell Party!”

Overview:

With his legal problems soon to be resolved, Captain Celebrity makes plans to return to America.

Our Take:

I’ll admit I didn’t like Captain Celebrity, and I never thought I would. I feel that there has been a bit of retconning in his characterization, but I suppose I can see where they’re coming from. I could have sworn that not only did he try to cheat on his wife with Makoto, but he had cheated before. Turns out that might not be the case, and instead, he has a personality that is easy to take advantage of. He’s changed his image for the positive, and most of his legal problems are about to be resolved. So, with his wife about to give birth, he understandably is anxious to go home.

I can put most of that aside because I don’t think he’s a bad guy, per se, and maybe I fell for the marketing, but he won me over. When three little girls are kidnapped by a flying monster-like villain, he puts his body on the line to save them. He doesn’t want any photos of himself taken because he thinks he looks at his worst, but Makoto insists that this is the best he’s looked.

Unfortunately, it seems like our villain for this season has its sights set on Captain Celebrity for some reason. I hope that nothing bad happens to him now that he’s become likable. With the last few episodes focusing on Aizawa, I thought I’d be disappointed getting back to the modern day. I’m glad that disappointment didn’t last long.
