English Dub Review: Gnosia “511”
OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)
Yuri awakens in a timeline where they are on Guard Duty with SQ, giving them a chance to learn more about her complicated past and her connections to other crew members.
OUR TAKE
We’re back to weekly reviews of SINGLE episodes of Gnosia, and this week puts Yuri on Guard Duty for the first time, which confirms to the rest of the crew that they are human in this loop. At first thought, this wouldn’t seem to add much, as considering Yuri is our point of view character, we already know from the start of each episode that they are confirmed to be human (other than that one time when they were Gnosia). But what this does add is giving Yuri’s opinion and theories more weight during deliberations about who the suspect might be, which is not something that Yuri has been able to rely on much in previous loops, and does end up helping in uncovering the two Gnosia this time around and putting them in cold sleep. Plus, we also get to know more about SQ for the first time, which is a bit surprising considering she’s one of the first crew members Yuri meets on this journey. She mainly filled the personality of flirty and lackadaisical, often teasing people (usually Yuri) and sometimes using that to turn suspicion onto them, and that sometimes being because she was the Gnosia and sometimes not.
Interestingly, this parallels the last episode where Yuri bonded with Comet, though as confirmed humans instead of confirmed Gnosia. But that doesn’t mean there’s nothing interesting to chew on here, as we learn that SQ is actually a clone of some sort of human trafficker named Manan, who it turns out is the one that makes Remnan freak out so much because she used to own him. SQ was meant to be spare body for Manan to upload her memories to, but for whatever reason in most loops, this didn’t work, so SQ became her own person. I say “most” because according to SQ, there may be loops where the transfer WAS successful, and so that SQ is actually Manan, though that seems to have only happened once and Yuri was not actively addressing it. And just like the Comet episode, the bonding Yuri has with their woman partner for the episode ends with said woman saying she loves them, despite only knowing them for maybe a few days. AND it won’t be the last time that happens THIS MONTH, but we’ll get to that when we get to it. For now, it’s just neat to see these characters get more development, and we’ll get a Jina episode up next, so maybe there’s a Rachio episode soon after?
