English Dub Review: Spy X Family “Anya’s Era Has Come”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

Anya and Damian finally get to relax after the bus hijacking and are rewarded for their efforts.

OUR TAKE

And with that, we reach the end of the Busjacking arc…mostly. According to the fan wiki (which who knows how credible that is) there is a BIT more of it in the next episode, but that’s also counted as part of the next arc, so…I guess we’ll see what that means. But effectively, the climax of the arc happened in the last episode and this was mainly just giving everything from that resolution while setting up some things to expand on in future arcs. Anya, Damian, and all of their friends are safe, and even given a Stella Star for how they managed to keep everyone safe, as well as gaining some considerable popularity at school. But more importantly, Damian respects Anya a lot more, even if he’s really bad at showing it, though they’re both a couple of kids, so what can you expect, really. We also see the main difference between the Forgers and the Desmonds in terms of how their families structure support. Yor (and Loid, though in disguise) arrive on the scene as soon as possible to see that Anya is okay and unharmed after the incident, showing how much they worried about her safety. Damian’s mother, however, arrives shortly after (not her fault her car couldn’t catch Yor running on foot) and is happy to see Damian alive…at first.

However, once Damian tries to save face by having his mother promise to not tell his father that he was crying, her attitude changes on a dime. As Anya reads her mind, her loving and caring motherly thoughts twist into feelings of contempt and hatred for Damian, even going as far as to wish he had died on the bus. Though what’s more interesting is that the loving thoughts are still mixed in, meaning that there’s something going on in her head that is…rather complicated, and is probably caused in no small part by how her husband treats her. For some reason she asks Damian to not let his far know she was here, which I don’t understand but will probably be revealed later. So yeah, it looks like Anya is definitely winning in her self-imposed friendship race with Yor. And this feels like it would be a good place to wrap up the season but…nope, we’ve still got a handful more episodes left, so let’s see where the rest of this takes us! Hopefully somewhere good!
