Review: Adventure Time – Fionna and Cake “The Lion of Embers”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)While Finn fights for his life, numerous princesses try to kiss him to wake him up, Huntress Wizard tries to find water, and Fionna feels strung along by an old ex.OUR TAKEOkay, now I’m starting to get a little worried. I’m glad that we’re getting some follow up to how Fionna is still hanging in there day by day in her world and her life isn’t going to be the most magical, but balancing that within an episode with the other two plots really makes her look like the odd one out in her own show. We’ve got three ongoing subplots here, Finn’s friends trying to revive him, Huntress Wizard trying to navigate her new form and powers, and Fionna fumbling through being a late 20’s-early 30’s girl in the city with a magical cat friend. We get a little more expansion on that in the cold open, where we see the exact moment where Ice King becoming Simon again changed her world from being a genderswapped Adventure Time to what it was at the start of the series, but is that something that’s important to this season? Or should this have been in the first season at some point? Because as much as it’s nice to see Prismo (now once again voiced by Kumail Nanjiani) and Scarab and the Cosmic Owl again, I wanna know how FIONNA AND CAKE, the TITLE CHARACTERS, fit into this. Also it’s kind of weird that Cake is trying to date a human, even if it is probably a human version of Lord Monochromicorn, the genderswapped version of Jake’s wife Lady Rainicorn. As for the plots the show seems to be more interested in, Finn is still dying, but also somehow NOT dying, and Bubblegum, Marceline, Simon, and several returning princesses are trying everything and anything to get him to wake up. And here’s where this kinda just feels like they wanted to do another season of Adventure Time where Finn is older…except he’s also not conscious, so that would be odd. And while all of that is happening, Huntress Wizard is still several different seeds across several universes and is trying to adapt to her seed form by getting water, which she only ends up getting once Fionna cries into her plant. Does this mean that these plots will finally converge and Fionna will feel like an active part of her own show? One can only hope, but we’re officially through a third of the season, and I haven’t heard anything about them getting a third one, so we really need to hurry the donk up and get to the important stuff.
