Confusion Clarified: South Park Season 28 Unexpectedly Premieres with a New 5-Episode Structure
In a move characteristic of its irreverent style, South Park recently surprised fans and industry observers by abruptly concluding its 27th season and immediately launching Season 28, a sudden shift that has now been clarified by a representative speaking to The Hollywood Reporter.
The surprise premiere episode, “Twisted Christian,” aired on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, just weeks after Season 27 wrapped up its seemingly short run. The confusion stemmed from widespread initial reports that the show’s new deal with creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone guaranteed a traditional 10-episode Season 27.
The New 5-Episode Model
According to a representative for the show, the initial reporting regarding the 10-episode count was inaccurate. The new structure for the series breaks the expected annual run into two smaller parts with five episodes per season which is par for the course for a show that has averaged six a season the last few years.
This approach ensures the show fulfills its contractual obligation to produce 10 episodes per year under the massive deal with Paramount+, but divides them into shorter, more flexible production blocks. This allows Parker and Stone the flexibility to produce timely satire while accommodating their broader production schedule.
While subject to change due to the show’s unique production style, the five-episode season is tentatively expected to conclude with its finale on December 10, 2025.
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
