Comic Review: Rick and Morty VS. The Universe #4
The End of the Beginning of the End
OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)
Finally reunited, Rick and Morty make their final confrontation against Parmesean for the fate of their universe.
OUR TAKE
And that brings this event miniseries to an end…except barely anything is resolved, no one learns anything, and oh yeah, it’s not an ending! Instead, it’s merely a set up for the next and reportedly last miniseries for the Rick and Morty brand in Oni Press: Rick and Morty – The End, which starts in a couple months. Considering how bumpy the ride had become between the last big issue and the tie-ins, I was hoping for things to at least end on a stronger note, but sorry, your ending is in another castle! Rick’s efforts to reboot the universe fall flat, he and Morty have a huge argument (or rather Rick just rants at Morty for a few pages) which feels like it comes out of nowhere, and then when they’re captured, Rick flees across the universe to set up The End. We do at least learn what happened to Universe C-137 to make him suddenly drop dead, which is actually a pretty interesting explanation. Apparently he was due for his Big Crunch (a real life theory about how a universe could contract at the end of its life cycle to contrast with a Big Bang) and sort of gets reincarnated as a baby. So, I guess Rick didn’t have anything to do with his death after all and this manhunt was all pointless! Isn’t that GREAT?!
Rick tries to make amends by using the rebooting device to potentially get C-137 back to his former form for Parmesean’s sake, though after his rant at Morty, she thinks he’s going to screw them, forcing him to flee, as I mentioned before. So now, instead of Rick and Morty against the universe, it’s…just Rick against the universe. And probably all of the surviving universes who were tasked with killing him too. And even his own family, if the solicitations for the first two issues of The End are to be believed. We’re basically back to square one but worse, which does not make me super optimistic for these final six issues. But on the bright side, it looks like they’ll be keeping it to just the miniseries with no tie ins, so at least that’s a sign we’ll be keeping things focused. For whatever reason, they’ll be taking a month off between this issue and the beginning of The End, but when we come back, we’re hitting the ground running as we speed head long into conclusion to the Rick and Morty comics (by Oni Press).
