English Dub Review: Witch Watch “The Incredible Shrinking Adventure; The Hamazaki Fall Bread Festival; Lucky Birthday”
OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)
Mori and Nico shrink, help a girl find out if her crush likes her through bread voodoo, and then try to make Mori’s birthday lucky.
OUR TAKE
Hey, it’s another episode that’s all just random shenanigans, with not a hint of character development to be seen! I mean, I guess that’s fine, not every episode needs to be absolutely essential to the plot, and we’re getting closer to the end of the season so we should savor these fun nonsense episodes before what will probably be a more serious finale closes in. Plus, it helps that the segments this week are actually quite funny! Not funny in a way that makes me laugh, but more in the way that makes me think “huh, that was unexpected and pretty clever”, which would probably describe a lot of this show overall, if I’m being honest. First up, we have a shrinking plot so that Nico and Morihito try to eat more of a donut without eating it all really fast, but then find out they’re very weak and unable to contact their other friend while shrunk down. Classic Nico. Actually, all of these segments stem from Nico doing a spell and things going a bit wrong, so at least it’s consistent. The next one is about a girl asking a cookie with her crush’s hair to find out if that crush likes her, but shock of all shocks, the cookie can’t speak in anything but bread terms.
Luckily, the girl works at a bakery and seems to pick up on everything right away…aside from the fact that the cookie man is actually saying that her crush already has a girlfriend, so that sucks for her, but at least now she can get some cathartic revenge by eating the cookie and pretending it’s him. Lastly, we have a segment about Morihito’s birthday, wherein he plans to find his own style of clothing now that he is sixteen, so Nico casts a spell to make him super lucky, though accidentally makes him the opposite. Though oddly enough, his extremely positive outlook on things helps him to get through the day as if nothing bad happened, and in fact he ends up looking cool enough to be in a fashion magazine he apparently reads…but feels bad because his style wasn’t something he himself picked. Ah well, better luck next year. So yeah, three perfectly fine sketches that are pretty much just spinning our wheels, but it’s fine to have that after they’ve done so much that actually moved things along. Just three episodes left until the end of the season!
