English Dub Review: Onmyo Kaiten Re:Birth Verse “Don’t Screw Around with People Desperately Trying to Get By! The Wailing of Seiryu Tower”
Overview (Spoilers Below):
Takeru decides to aid Tsukimiya in thwarting Seimei’s World Whittle. Their first stop, Seiryu Tower.
Our Take:
In another shocking twist, Takeru isn’t the only person who’s aware of Seimei’s World Whittle, as his dream crush, Tsukimiya, also knows about the onmyo leader’s nefarious plot. This is because Tsukimiya is experiencing a parallel world exploration similar to Takeru’s, as she also retains the memories from the other versions of herself after dying. Additionally, she comes from the future where her hometown has been eradicated by a mysterious woman, prompting her to use a device to send her mind into a person from the past. Her similar determination further sets the stage for Takeru’s supposedly final shot at saving the world he’s reincarnated in. However, they couldn’t just barge right in and take out Seimei in the blink of an eye. Instead, Takeru and Tsukimiya will have to destroy one of Seimei’s energy sources, starting with Seiryu Tower.
Of course, this do-or-die mission isn’t as simple as it sounds, as the only person standing in their way is Kazura, who unthinkingly follows Seimei’s orders. It also isn’t without a sacrifice that led Takeru to destroy the tower, as Tsukimiya sacrificed herself to save him from Kazura’s wrath. Given that she died a few times throughout the season, the shock value has already worn itself out, especially with the whole parallel worlds situation. However, that didn’t make Takeru’s continued striving to push forward less impactful, as he’s now left without his dream crush this time around, unlike the previous episodes. I would also commend Ciaran Strange for conveying Kazura’s blind rage through his vocal performance, particularly highlighting the contrast in range between Kazura and Kurt Rockhans in Unaware Atelier Meister. Although the shock value was less effective than I expected, the episode kicks off Takeru’s confrontation with Seimei on a respectable note, particularly given the tower’s destruction.
