Review: Glen

Adult Swim SMALLS has premiered its new animated series, Glen, from creators Shawn Golden, Joe Hingleberg, and Travis Pelto’s Big Big Baby. The show centers on the life of an awkward but determined man named Glen, who is guided by his cat and mentor.

The series blends whimsical songs and daydreams with the challenges of everyday life, such as finding a new job and navigating friendships. The first episode, “Wrestler,” features Glen interviewing for a position at Dr. Ize’s optometry office.

The show’s aesthetic leans a little more closely to that of other Adult Swim series like Ha Ha You Clowns! and even some of Joe Bennett’s earlier shorts for Cake. And while I don’t see enough in the first short to warrant a pickup of a 30-minute animated comedy series just yet because you really need to fill out a cast to help you out for that allotted time, a quarter-hour is definitely feasible just simply focusing on our lead character, however, not as desirable in this current streaming landscape that seems preferable to the longer run times.

There’s definitely something here that can be cultivated for the future, and I’m looking forward to seeing more from these Big Big Babies.
