English Dub Review: Witch Watch “Dear Kara; New Friends; Date With the Knight”
OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)
Nico and Morihito help one friend put a family letter back together, another friend ask a girl out, and then help Morihito to express his emotions with a tiny version of himself on his head.
OUR TAKE
Once again, we’ve got an episode that’s pretty much a mish mash of mostly unrelated segments that make up the runtime they need for a full episode. But at this point, I’ve come to expect something funny or at least entertaining out of it regardless, so it’s fine for me as a viewer. It’s just coming up with something to say about it all that becomes a bit of an issue. The first part is oddly emotional as Nico’s friend Kara brings her and Morihito into some family drama, initially thinking the letter was her late mother revealing her dad was not actually her birth father, but actually it turns out to be the reverse! It seems that her late mother is, in fact, her STEP mother and her dad is her biological dad! And as with all of these types of stories, the real lesson is that family is the people who love you, not necessarily those who you are related to. The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb, as they say. That’s the whole saying people often forget. But yeah, solid segment, not really connected to the main characters but it works well enough to at least give some fleshing out to one of the supporting cast.
The next segment is pretty much just a gag about helping one awkward guy student ask out an awkward girl student, but it also acts as a lead in to the final segment, which is focused on more Nico crushing on Morihito stuff, but in an interesting and honestly rather cute way. She and Morihito end up going on a date, but as he is usually pretty stoic, she wants to have a way of seeing his emotions more clearly, so with his permission, she creates a tiny version of him on his head to see what he’s feeling. As a result, she sees that he actually feels quite a bit over the course of the date, including interest in her. It’s not a story with a ton of conflict, but it doesn’t really need to be. It’s just about two people trying to understand each other better out of love for one another. Nine episodes in, Witch Watch has continued to be a delight to watch, made clear by the very pleasant dynamic between its two leads. But surely we’re due for something more dramatic by now, wouldn’t you say? There’s a two part story coming up, so I guess we’ll see.
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
