English Dub Review: Medaka Kuroiwa is Impervious to My Charms “Can’t Charm Him”
Overview:
Mona Kawai had never met a boy who could resist her charms. Enter Medaka Kuroiwa, who not only withstands her every move but also acts like he’s disgusted by them! Is Mona’s queen bee ego capable of taking no for an answer?
Our Take:
I remember reading the manga for this but eventually got bored because a story like this gets worse the longer it goes on. I can’t think of anyone who would put up with all the romance shenanigans that a lot of these protagonists put up with for as long as they do. In this show it makes sense why it would happen, for a little while at least. Mona doesn’t actually want to fall in love with Medaka, she wants him to think she is so he’ll fall in love with her. On the flipside, Medaka doesn’t want to fall in love with her because he is heir to a shrine and being with a woman is against the rules apparently. It’s a bit of a weird set up but it could be fun, what has made it enjoyable so far is the voice acting.
Mona Kawai is a girl who hides her Kansai accent, and she’s voiced by Megan Shipman. Anytime I hear Megan now I think of her role as Anya in Spy x Family and it comes through a bit here. But what I love most is when we hear Mona’s thoughts we get to hear her accent and she sounds like a southern belle. If Mona used her accent all the time I’m sure even Medaka would fall for her charms.

There's got to be some kind of twist that's going to happen with this. I don't know if they're setting up an April Fool's joke now or what's going on, but it seems too strange that they'd suddenly reverse on doing a fourth and fifth season after the show was already renewed and they were even just talking about working on those seasons like a couple months ago or something. Or maybe the two episodes yet to release will secretly somehow each be like a "season" in themselves?
