Overview:

A scourge has descended upon vampire society in the form of serial murders. The killings appear unrelated at first glance, but every crime scene has one thing in common: a card left behind, bearing the words “True of Vamp”—the name given to the legendary progenitor of all vampires.

Having recently lost his wife, Dali Delico is prioritizing his family, to work the case he turns his home into a nursery. Here they can work the case and all of his coworkers can take care of their children.

Our Take:

I’ll talk about what I can definitively say was good, and that is the animation. J.C. Staff went with a unique art style for this show. It looks a lot like a water color painting and since this anime is based on a play they were able to go wild with it. If I had a nickel for everytime I watched an anime about vampires based on a play I’d have two nickels which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice. The other anime I’m talking about is Mars Red and there are some similarities, except in that one vampires are the bottom of the social ladder.

My biggest issue with this show was that I didn’t understand what was happening most of the time. The world was interesting at times and when it would pull me in with fascinating questions it would never answer those questions. The vampires of this world don’t subsist on blood alone because we see them eat normal food, in fact I don’t recall seeing them drink blood other than other vampires to assert control over them. Humans are nowhere to be seen but they are mentioned which was another frustration.

One of the most important things for me when I review a show is the ending. The ending for this was maddening to me. We got to see the kids all grown up and some of them even got married, it was awesome for me because I love stories where we get to see multiple generations. It was nice to see these kids move on from the trauma they experienced and have successful and happy lives.

It turns out all of that was a dream Dali was having and I don’t think I have to tell you how annoying that is. The biggest annoyance was the fact that a character was introduced in that “dream” that seems to have some importance because we learned they actually exist as well.

Delico’s Nursery was a convoluted story that had an ending that was somehow more disappointing than the rest of the show. If it would have nailed the ending it would have gone a long way for me but instead it became my biggest problem. Maybe if it didn’t set up a second season that we will probably never see it wouldn’t have been as bad. But as it stands this was a forgettable show that I don’t recommend to anyone, there’s better vampire shows out there.
