Review: The Great North “Bad Speecher Adventure”
OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)
Ham needs help with making a speech, so the family tells him three stories that are conspicuously similar to decades old movies.
OUR TAKE
The Great North returns after an extended break to reach a milestone for Fox animated shows: getting a fourth season. Most didn’t even make it past their first, and the last one that got to FOUR was The Cleveland Show, which ended over a decade ago, so one more renewal would really make The Great North stand out amongst the crop. I remember back when it was announced close to Bless the Harts and Duncanville and thinking that all three would be gone after their third season, but Duncanville had their last few episodes dumped on Hulu (and then yanked off soon after) while Bless the Harts didn’t even make it that far. And we’ll see how Housebroken does as we wait for whether it gets another renewal. But yeah, The Great North has definitely proven itself in number of episodes alone, so maybe before too long, we’ll be celebrating it getting one hundred episodes. In the meantime, we should get to talking about the season premiere itself and see if it properly honors the progression this series has made so far. Well, you may be disappointed to know that it’s…just kind of okay. It’s not bad, it’s not great, it’s just kinda there.
It’s a vignette episode of movie parodies, which may be a first (or at least a rarity) for this show because I do remember Bob’s Burgers doing plenty of these, but I don’t think Great North often dabbles in those. First off, we have Judy doing a segment about Bob Ross being in Top Gun and fooling enemy fighters by painting their jets the color of the sky. Then Beef does a…I think it’s Good Will Hunting? I’ve never seen it but it’s that plus being about the guy who made the Alaskan flag. Lastly, Honeybee does a reboot of The Matrix, but involving Guy Fieri as a white Morpheus and having it be about tasty vegetable preparation. And that one honestly gets the win for me because I do like me some broccoli and Brussels sprout. And also they use a lot of green and that’s my favorite color, so bonus points there. But ultimately, there’s only so much that you can do for an episode like this that is really only going to end up feeling average. Hopefully the next episode will be better, which I thought was going to be next week, but will actually be over a month from now, so see you then!
