English Dub Review: Undead Unluck “Dream”
OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)
The battle continues against Spoil, whose abilities are further revealed as it changes to its second form.
OUR TAKE
Well, this is basically just a continuation of the plot from last time, so essentially more of the same here. Though while last episode was mainly about scoping out the place and understanding what was happening, now Spoil has been revealed as a giant purple monster who they can fight directly. And by fight directly, I mean use that nice zombie girl (who apparently doesn’t even have a name?) as a bad luck bomb against it, which then triggers its slightly more menacing looking second form. It also gets to have a monologue about how its power is actually helping the world by making people think about self preservation, which is…a take? I’m sure plenty of bad guys believe they’re actually helping the world and from what I can tell, these UMAs are possibly age old creatures that may have primordial connections…but I’m only unsure of that because it seems a bit unclear what exactly they are and why they’re being hunted (besides doing weird stuff like zombifiying a whole town, which is obviously bad). Maybe that’ll be cleared up in time, or maybe I just need to pay better attention and the info is already present! Equally possible, really.
One thing that did jump out at me and made me think about thematic implications was how both Andy and now the zombie girl reach out to Fuuko to both make an attack happen but also in an affectionate way, making that affection a literal attack against others. The way Andy often touches her is pretty much just molestation a lot of the time, which I guess is the point in making the most use of her power (problematic elements aside), but it’s also for the purpose of getting her to like him more and then, eventually, kill him with her bad luck. Meanwhile, the zombie girl embraces her both as a way of thanking Fuuko but also so that she, the zombie, may become able to defeat Spoil, who has already ruined her life. It is at once a way of connecting with Fuuko but also of ending her own life and using it for a greater cause. It’s just interesting how all of that ties together in that moment, especially if Fuuko was able to like this zombie enough to make the bad luck strong enough to land a hit, which it apparently it was since it forced a mode change. Anyway, next time is the conclusion to the arc.
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
