English Dub Review: Tomo-chan Is a Girl! “My First Part-Time Job / The Abandoned Cinderella”

Overview:

The girls get a part-time job and Misuzu isn’t really feeling like herself.

Our Take:

This episode is a return to the show’s formula after straying from it the past two episodes. The episode is full of a lot of comedic moments, but not much progression in Jun’s and Tomo’s relationship. They have a couple of brief nice moments together, but nothing too amazing.

Misuzu is actually the star of this episode. Mainly the second segment, but she’s a surprising high point of the first one as well. Who knew someone as cold as Misuzu actually had such great customer service skills?

The second segment also shows a side to Misuzu that we haven’t seen before. She’s actually showing remorse for her actions. Well, she’s thinking about it anyway. She feels bad for everything she’s done to interfere in Tomo’s and Jun’s relationship. She feels like she caused Tomo’s self-doubt by saying it isn’t hard to act like a normal girl. We also get to see her act a little during the class’s play rehearsal. Misuzu is playing Cinderella, which is certainly an interesting casting choice. Regardless, I like seeing Misuzu as the main focus in this episode. That hasn’t happened much, so I’m all for the change.

One thing I noticed in the episode is the use of slang in the English dub. The re has been slang used in the show before, but it feels like it’s more present in this particular episode. Tomo says “bruh” a coupe of times and Tanabe says “sus.” I’m not completely opposed to the use of slang, but it should be used sparingly. If it’s thrown in too much, that just dates the show. We’re not at that point here, but it’s something to be mindful of.

This episode isn’t quite as strong as the past couple, but it’s still a lot of fun. There are plenty of clever jokes, entertaining gags, and of course Carol just being herself. I also find it hilarious that Jun is playing a tree in their play. They’re in high school and he’s getting a bit part that I’d expect from an Elementary School show. I think it fits him though.
