Season Review: The Legend of Vox Machina Season Two
Overview:
In the second season, the Vox Machina crew finds themselves up against a group of dragons calling themselves the Chroma Conclave. It will take the entire group confronting their pasts and finding actual weapons of the Gods to stop them.
Our Take(Spoilers):
I was rather late to the Vox Machina bandwagon and I still have a ton of the Critical Role stream to catch up on. But after watching the first season I definitely fell in love with the series and its cast of characters. So, suffice it to say that the second season would have some very big shoes to fill. Spoilers start below!
Almost every issue I had with the first season was addressed in the second outing. I wasn’t too big a fan of the fact that the first season almost exclusively focused on Percy. Sure he’s a cool character in his own right but for a show that is based on a D&D campaign, I found that odd. I don’t know how many D&D campaigns you’ve played but rarely does one character get whole segments to themselves it is a game to be played with others after all.
Throughout, the twelve-episode season almost every character gets some moments to shine and get some focus. This felt more like a typical D&D campaign where everyone got cool little moments and of course, magical items.
The animation was solid and stayed that way throughout. The fight scenes in particular were a great treat to watch. I couldn’t believe the voice talent they got for this season. The original group itself is made up of phenomenal talent so adding on to that just felt like overkill. Getting to hear Will Friedle took me back to my Saturday morning cartoon days and I loved getting to hear Henry Winkler.
My favorite moment of the season had to be Vax becoming a champion of the Matron of Ravens. I love the Raven Queen in regular D&D lore but this somehow improved it. It didn’t hurt that he got a really cool armor to go along with it. I wish my DM would give me swag like that.
There was a lot of romance seemingly waiting to bloom among the group. Keyleth and Vax were the two I was most invested in coming into the season. But between Vax’s newfound responsibilities and Keyleth’s heel turn, I was a little upset. She seemed to be swooning over him this whole season but where was that when he confessed to her last season? Even if it bothered you as it did me there is plenty of blushing to be had from the rest of the group.
If you love animation or D&D this is a series that can’t be missed. Not only that but Critical Role’s second campaign The Mighty Nein is also getting a series and this is getting a third season. So Critical Role fans will have a lot of content to chew on in the coming years. Just make sure you take the time to watch all of this as fast as you can.
