English Dub Review: From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman “The Old Country Bumpkin Goes to the Holy City”

Overview (Spoilers Below):
Back in the capital, Beryl struggles to shake his guilt over Vesper’s grave injuries, while Surena tries to cheer him up.  The day of Princess Salacia’s wedding draws near, and Beryl joins the escort detail.  After a short reunion with Shueste and with the threat of an attack by the Verdapis Mercenary Company looming, they reach Dilmahakha, the holy city of Sphenedyardvania.  But who is watching him?

Our Take:
With the Verdapis Mercenary Company entering the scene, there’s no doubt that things are about to heat up for the remaining episodes.  Following an ambush that left Vesper severely wounded, Beryl vows to take down the assassins responsible.  That is, after he confronts his guilt first through his reunion with Surena.  It remains to be seen whether his revenge will force him to do something drastic.  Given his kind nature, it’s unlikely, but when one of his friends is hurt, we all know that he’s not going to let it slide.  After all, the wedding for Salacia is one that everyone’s been waiting for, and we all know how we feel if it’s disrupted.  That said, this is definitely where the second season aims to conclude on a rather thrilling note.
Granted, I still have issues with the English dub direction, some of which are difficult to ignore.  But that’s not to say I shouldn’t admire what it’s attempting to accomplish in its characters, notably Beryl’s grudge against the assassins and Allucia’s strive to admit her feelings towards him.  The episode also offers another example of Beryl’s generous honesty, with him admitting that he still has some things to do before he can answer Shueste’s love.  Thankfully, Shueste comes to understand when confronted with that response.  I would’ve started throwing hands if she didn’t.  Besides that, the episode is notably a stepping stone of what’s to come, with the preparations underway for the wedding or, in Beryl’s case, another showdown with the Verdapis Mercenary Company.
