English Dub Review: Golden Kamuy “Cocoon”

Kadokura challenges Sekiya, one of the tattooed prisoners, to a deadly game in order to save the life of Hijikata.

Our Take

While the last episode was one big exposition dump, this one delivers in laughs with a random filler episode where a random child encounters the towering brute Ushiyama who isn’t in the best mental state and hilariously keeps referring to spouting the word “Pussy” causing the child to perceive it as his name to the point that he once even calls him a “Pussy Monster” thereby later ditching him after seeing his violent nature but that slowly leads to another story intertwining.

The other subplot involves Hijikata being “dead” for quite a while, and with Ushiyama’s disappearance, the tattooed skins are still as valuable. Everyone’s finding for them, including Kadokura who got called out by Sekiya, the latter thinking that he got Kaokura cornered. And while things didn’t completely go his way, Hijikata himself has an unexpected trick up his sleeve…

Overall, a nice conclusion for the first story. I was wondering how they were gonna get out of this predicament, but the episode’s theme of survival fits well for everyone within this series given that this is an era where anything could possibly kill you like the old west. It’s however strange and unnatural to see cocoons at such a winter season though, but I can’t wait to see how everyone else is doing in later episodes.
