Review: Rick and Morty “Bethic Twinstinct”

Overview

Space and Clone Beth kick off a secret relationship that doesn’t stay secret for long and eventually the entire rest of the family finds out causing Jerry to roll up into a bug cocoon. When he gets out, Jerry threatens to leave but instead uses reverse-psychology to try and convince his Beth that he’s totally fine with whatever is going on here. All of this, during Thanksgiving…

Our Take

Slowly but surely the producers of Rick and Morty are kind of pulling a South Park when it comes to promotion of their series. For example, when the trailer came out for this episode I was a bit worried that we were going to get a video game parody which has already been done countless times, and while you do get a sample size of gaming jokes, the main point of video gaming’s long desire was perhaps the most eloquent…we go to games to escape.

In this case, it’s Summer and Morty attempting to flee reality when a love triangle develops between the two Beths and Jerry in what is by far the most important episode of the show as it pertains to Jerry and Beth’s fragile marriage since the show’s fourth season and one that looks like it’s going to have potential ripple effects later in the season, and possibly, future seasons (I would think at LEAST one Doctor Wong appearance could be on the table, if not multiple). Let’s also add that Jerry turning into a bug cocoon might be the funniest surprise moment of the season thus far which goes to show Rick and Morty has some solid playable cards up its sleeves.

If you were looking for a proper sequel episode to the “Star Mort Rickturn of the Jerri” episode, this is it. It’s one of the best written episodes of the franchise and neither Rick and Morty even had to leave the house to make it work. Let’s also shout out Sarah Chalke, one of the more underrated voice actors in the biz, for adding multiple subtle nuances as both Beths that were so good that really the only other actor I can compare this skill-set to is the variety of actors that have won the Emmys for doing so i.e. Seth MacFarlane, Alex Borstein, and it might be time for Beth to get her’s.
