Review: The Gimmicks
Are you a pro wrestling fan? Do you like anything that shits on Vince McMahon and the WWE without recourse? Do you like Bullet Club or Gallows and Anderson? Well, have I got the show for you.
If you were watching WWE programming, especially during 2017, you’ll remember a bunch of skits with Gallows and Anderson playing Tex Ferguson and Chad 2 Badd in Southpaw Championship Wrestling. Well…Tex is Sex, and this is the funniest shit involving pro wrestling I’ve seen in a very long time. And these two characters, who started as characters from WWE’s Southpaw Championship Wrestling and expanded in Gallows and Anderson’s “Talk ‘N Shop A Mania” PPV shows from 2020 and 2021, found their natural progression in a cartoon on the internet.
The supporting cast is where The Gimmicks shines. You have a world class talent in Rocky Romero, who plays the absolute worst luchador in existence, Tio Chico. But the actual biggest surprise in The Gimmicks is nZo, who does what he does best: play himself. I’m going to come out and say it. I did not expect anything good coming from nZo. That’s mostly influenced from how his time with the WWE ended up.
After the first couple of seconds of “The DIC ,” you get the firm notion that this is not kid friendly, nor is going to be endorsed by the WWE anytime soon. The Gimmicks was released at the exact right time. If you don’t even follow pro wrestling, you know that Vince McMahon is under the gun because of his inability to keep his genetic jackhammer in his pants.
The story is simple, and short. the WWW needs a new star attraction. That falls into Sex and Ex Ferguson’s lap when nZo gets thrown into The Federation dungeon, marked for death. Now with nZo out, they need to get him into a new gimmick while they try to keep him away from the clutches of Mr. Mic. Meanwhile Ex Ferguson is trying every thing possible to make money. The story is simple, but definitely digestible.
Now, here’s the catch of the show. Well, less of a catch and more of a caveat. The Gimmicks is run on a NFT funded backbone. Meaning, that if you own an NFT for The Gimmicks, you have the ability to become a part of the actual lore of the show, and have a say in where the show goes with voting at the end of each episode.
If you go on their marketplaces, and purchase an NFT, you can gain access that, and a lot more. As a borderline internet boomer, I’m still trying to wrap my head around a lot of the NFT wave. But for shows like The Gimmicks, it acts and feels like a pass into crafting the world of the show. I can get behind this if it allows the creators to flex their creative muscles and make the world of Kayfabe Estates seem more organic.
Ultimately, The Gimmicks is 20 five-ish minute episodes of hilarity. If you’re a fan of pro wrestling, or satire shows like Metalocalypse and Robot Chicken (Seth Green actually made an appearance, and the robot chickens are a recurring nuisance), you will absolutely love this show.
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
