English Dub Review: The Saint’s Magic Power is Omnipotent Season One

Based on the Japanese light novel series written by Yuka Tachibana and illustrated by Yasuyuki Syuri. The show story follows the adventures of a 20 something receptionist named Sei Takanashi who after returning home from a long day at work, is pulled into a foreign medieval world through unknown magical means in traditional Isekai fashion. Upon her arrival to the kingdom of Salutania, whose citizens have lived within a shroud of miasma, a force that brings forth monsters creating havoc around the world. Later, Sei overhears that the Grand Magus inadvertently summoned two Saints—Sei and a brown-haired girl. Needing only one holy maiden, the prince declares the other girl as the Saint, which consequently leaves Sei to her own devices.

Sei sets her sight on the Medicinal Flora Research Institute, an establishment known for its studies regarding herbs and potions. While indulging in her latest passion, Sei has a fateful encounter with the commander of the Third Order of Knights. But little does she know, her aptitude as a Saint will continue to exert its influence over her new life…

This show, to put it simply, is good. It is not amazing or thrilling, and it definitely isn’t bad or disturbing either. It doesn’t really offer anything new, but it’s presented in such a way that it’s well-paced and flows nicely enough that you’re neither confused nor bored. The art style is pretty, and there’s nothing noticeably poor about the animation either.

Throughout the entire series, I found myself wondering what this anime was trying to be, especially after that awkward Isekai introduction. But after finishing the series and seeing the characters reach a proper conclusion to the very first chapter in their own stories, and then it hit me. Although this story shared many common tropes tied with your by-the-numbers love & Isekai stories in the same genre, it still stood out in its own way, even after having seen so many of the same stories repeated in different variations with the exception of a few that set itself apart such as keeping itself from being a reverse-harem story.

Overall, the story was very simplistic yet watchable enough for what it was. The soundtrack and voice acting were good too, and all get the job done. with the exception of a few characters, most of them aren’t really deep or enticing, but they’re not annoying or overly cliche either. At the very least, they’re fun to watch and their interactions feel natural. The only thing that keeps me from giving this a higher rating is the lack of character development and the lack of more detailed and engaging storylines but since this is based on an ongoing series, we can only hope these problems will both be fixed and expanded on if season 2 becomes a thing…
