English Dub Review: Full Dive: This Ultimate Next-Gen Full Dive RPG Is Even Shittier than Real Life! “Chance of Survival 0.1%”
Overview:
The city of Ted is on fire because goblins are attacking. This is a pretty rare occurrence in the game. Hiro discovers that if you die in the game then the game detonates destroying your console. Goblins are not the easy enemy they are made out to be in other forms of media. Hiro does save a little girl and might have discovered a unique power while doing so? For his efforts, he is awarded a new title. “Attention Whore Best Friend Killer with a Massive God Complex”, how nice, he never gets a break.
Our Take:
I am starting to think we aren’t going to ever go an episode without mentioning Hiro peeing his pants. Maybe after this episode, it will end cause Hiro changed his pants. Seriously though… goblins are attacking and Reona wants him to change his pants. Hopefully, this is the end of it, it was funny at first but this is like the epitome of beating a dead horse.
Staying along that line of thought, Hiro can’t catch a break and it’s getting old. The game gives titles based on what the player has done. Hiro finally did something good in rescuing a little girl so I thought his title would reflect something at least a little more heroic. Instead, he gets the title “Attention Whore Best Friend Killer with a Massive God Complex” like… seriously? He saves a little girl from getting killed by a goblin and that is what he gets? I love self-deprecating humor as much as the next guy but this is getting to be a little much.
The animation was pretty cool in this episode. The guards getting wrecked by the goblin was pretty unique, but I really liked when Hiro activated his new ability. Or maybe it’s a glitch, not sure. Either way, I loved the lightning effects to show how fast he ran and I think it fits with Hiro’s character. He used to run track and was known to be really fast so I like that aspect of the game mirroring real life.
Johnny Yong Bosch got a little more into Hiro this episode. I’ve noticed when he does Hiro’s inner thoughts they are usually delivered hilariously. I don’t often think of JYB in comedic roles so maybe that is why it has taken a while to grow on me. I will say his chemistry with Natalie Van Sistine (Reona) is really awesome and my favorite part of the show. I don’t know how often voice actors interact (if at all) in the booth but it’s awesome.
This show is starting to lose my interest, unfortunately. I get that it doesn’t want to be a cliche power fantasy but give your hero some victories at least. Even when he gets one it feels like a loss for the comedy value. But by doing that it even ruins the comedy because it feels forced at this point. I hope it improves over the next few episodes.
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
