Review: Final Space “Change is Gonna Come”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

Gary and HUE investigate ways to stop Gwen’s condition, needing a material that can halt the process but ends up making her look more like Nightfall. Invictus tells Ash that Gary will kill her brother Fox and gives her a few days to decide whether or not to join him, then sends her back to the Galaxy Two with more control over her powers. Also, Tribore and his son are doing stuff.

OUR TAKE

Weird time to bring back the “previously on” segment when we haven’t been doing those since the beginning of the season. But yeah, things look to be building towards major revelations and twists, it’s just that few of them are based on logic or making use of already known information. First off, we have Quinn’s Final Space poisoning that is now being held back by this new substance they’ve found, but for some reason people seem to think this will turn her into Nightfall. Except the whole point of calling her that was to distinguish her from the Quinn of the present timeline AND we’ve seen that all the timelines involved, while similar, are not quite the same, and only one has really brought about her becoming Nightfall, so this isn’t exactly inevitable. But maybe that’s nitpicking, it just seemed annoying that the characters seemed to think this was just her path now.

And honestly, my main beef with this episode is how Ash is handled here. Ash has never been the most mentally stable character to begin with, but you would think she could piece some obvious things together. Namely that Invictus is able to control people’s minds and make them do his bidding AND that she had very recently seen him possess Fox before they had to escape and leave him behind. So this “prediction” he has very likely says less about Gary and more that he is going to essentially through a possessed Fox at Gary and then I guess get Ash to think he was right all along and join his side. This is a twist that is so blatantly obvious that everyone and their mother can see it coming, but apparently not one of the characters who has all the same information the viewer has. Okay, guess we’ll see how that goes.

Also, can we just drop all the Tribore segments entirely please? They really don’t do anything but pad the runtime and waste space that could be used for characters that matter. Not that it would erase the bigger problem, that being that Final Space never seems to know when to PICK A GODDAMN TONE. If it’s not Tribore taking up time, it’s KVN making incredibly inappropriate jokes during scenes that I assume are meant to be serious. Main character’s love interest is on the verge of death? Well, let’s bring in a giant fridge! Seriously, it’s gotta stop.
