English Dub Review: The Misfit of Demon King Academy “Taboo Magic”
OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)
Eleanore explains to Anos that she is actually a spell in the shape of a human, as well as that Zeshia is a series of clones. She also reveals that Kanon’s right hand, Derga, made the hero company to keep the hatred of demons alive, which is helped by one of his enduring spells, aske, keeps this hatred in people’s hearts. Kanon objected to much of this shortly after Anos’ death, but Derga killed him. As they discuss this, the final three Demon Emperors arrive and disrupt everything, followed by Avos Delhevia making an appearance and beginning his attack. The remaining emperors are defeated and captured, where it is found out that they’ve been possessed with someone’s source, like most of the others were. As the battle with Avos’ forces begins, Anos confronts him directly, where Avos shows that he is actually Lay, the true reincarnation of Kanon.
OUR TAKE
OMG so many reveals this week! I guess they really did just shrug off the other three emperors, which is what leads me to believe that this is likely the only season of this that we are getting. And honestly, I am more than alright with that, as it has been quite the slog to get this close to the end. Still, I do take pride in having called Kanon being Avos, though I do admit I got tripped up by Lay being him as well. It was actually my first guess based on his placement in the OP and ED, but then they fooled me by saying he was actually the reincarnation of Anos’ right hand man. So you know what? Credit where credit is due, they got me on that. Still does not give me the least bit of investment in this battle that’s going on, nor that Lay has suddenly proposed to Misha just so they can have SOME sort of development with the B Couple. I’ve just not been given much of a reason to care about any of this for the past twelve episodes and I doubt that will change with the last one coming up.
But okay, let’s talk about what Lay being Avos tells us. One thing being that Kanon became so disillusioned with humans after being killed by his closest allies that he decided to become a demon. And in a not at all original twist, it turns out that humans were the real monsters all along. It’s a bit odd that Lay has been at this while paling around with Anos since he joined the team but I guess we’ll see next week what this was all really for. Still though, the fact that he had to show up and completely steal the spotlight from the arc that was going on doesn’t say a whole lot of good things about the story structure here when they care so little about the story they’re on that they just want to end it as abruptly as possible, and the switch is VERY abrupt. The good news is that after next week this will all be behind us and we can just move on with our lives until the next aggressively mediocre anime comes along. Though I imagine that’s probably sooner rather than later given how more likely those are than actually good shows.
